The Methodist Church in Zambia has its roots in the mission activities of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of Great Britain that began work in the region in the late 19th century. The work was initially concentrated around the copper mines and the industrial centres, but the church gradually spread across Zambia. In 1941 the Central Board of Missions of the British Methodist Church began working in Northern Rhodesia (as Zambia was then known), establishing an archdeaconry in Livingstone to the south and another in Ndola - now the ecclesiastical and administrative centre of the church - in the north.
