Worship Method:

The worshipped method at the Nandikeswari temple in Birbhum, West Bengal is known as Chhau Puja. This worship includes different traditional ritual practices which are combined to form a unique and elaborate set of steps of prayer. To begin with, the devotees undertake a fast (nirjala), which continues for three days, as a symbol of their dedication and devotion to the Goddess. On the day of the puja, a three hour long puja is performed, wherein a special puja is offered to the deity represented by an installed image of Nandikeswar in the main temple hall. Prayers are recited and the priest performs a special ritual called ‘dhupa’ using incense sticks. After this, offerings are made to the Goddess, which can include flowers, lamps or garlands. Offerings also include fish, grains and coins as a symbol of good luck. The offerings are often followed with a special Aarti and bhajan recitations. At the end of the puja, Vedic prayers are performed, which include various sections from the Vedas.
