Brahma Janardan Temple worship follows traditional Hindu rituals and customs. The daily worship in the temple involves the offering of puja to items such as idols, flowers, fruits, leaves, and water. The puja is accompanied by Vedic mantras, chanting, and several other rituals such as “ceremonial pour of water over the gods”. Additional rituals sometimes include “circumambulation of the idol, making of offerings, observing ‘deepaaraadhana’ (lighting of the lamp) and ‘aarati’ (offering of flowers). Before entering the temple, devotees observe cleanliness and chant a prayer in Sanskrit for peace and good luck. They then carry out a traditional “pradakshina” (circumambulation) around the deity and offer various items such as flowers, fruits, incense sticks, and water. Later they apply tilak (a mix of turmeric, sandalwood, kumkum and other herbs) on the forehead of the deity and perform “aarathi” (lighting camphor-soaked cotton wicks). Prayers are then offered to the gods and blessings are received in return. After completing the rituals, devotees offer devotional singing (bhajans), “Gandhan” (a Vedic ritual involving the chanting of mantras) and “havan” (an elaborate sacrificial ritual).
