The original building of the cathedral was made of wood, but later rebuilt in stone. It consists of three separate structures – two churches and a pagoda. Each structure has its origins in the 16th century, but the cathedral was constructed during the 19th century. It is best known for its ironwood pillars, intricately carved wooden altars, and stone statue of Kwan Yin, Buddhist goddess of mercy. The Catholic community in Phat Diem has been in existence since 1875 and has grown to include more than 10,000 members. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Vietnam.
