The French began missionary work in the city of Cần Thơ in 1883 and the first missionary priests were sent there in 1884. The Hòa Cường church was completed in 1907 after a fund drive among the local Catholic population. It was dedicated to St. Francis Xavier, a Roman Catholic saint noted for his work in converting others to the faith. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Vietnam.
