History:

Santa Lucia is a small town in the Miranda State of Venezuela. Santa Lucia is located approximately 25km from the capital city of Caracas. The area around Santa Lucia has been inhabited since the 15th century, when indigenous members of the Caracol tribe settled in the region. The Caracol tribe established large plantations that exported tobacco, sugar cane, and coffee to other areas of Venezuela. In 1791, the Caracol leader Cholosi granted a parcela (plot of land) to Santo Domingo de Guzman, who then used the estate to build a sugar mill called Santa Lucia. The estate and mill quickly became a successful commercial enterprise and was taken over by a local landowner named Francisco de Miranda in 1793. In 1811, the region became involved in the Venezuelan War of Independence. During the war, several battles were fought in the area and the Santa Lucia estate saw many bloody confrontations between royalist and patriot forces. In 1816, after the war, Santa Lucia became part of the newly established federal state of Venezuela. The Santa Lucia estate then passed to the hands of Jose Maria Correa, who would later become a famous leader of the Venezuelan fight for autonomy and independence. The town of Santa Lucia, as we know it today, was founded on April 14, 1954. The town was built on the foundations of the old estate and over the years it has become a small agricultural and commercial center in the Miranda State.
