History:

Wernigerode Castle is a castle in Wernigerode, Germany which dates back to the late 11th century. The castle was first mentioned in a document from 1133, though most of the buildings that make up the castle today, were built in the 15th and 16th centuries. It has served as a fortress, a residence for the counts of Stolberg-Wernigerode, and later a hunting lodge for the prince-bishops of Halberstadt. The Renaissance of the castle began in 1535 when the new count, Count Henry I, chose Wernigerode as his residence in 1547. He added a large residential building to the castle and surrounded it by a curtain wall. Count Henry I also added a round tower and a secondary castle to the complex. The enclosure was completed in the 1580s. In 1641, the castle was damaged during the Thirty Years' War and soon after it became home to the administrative offices of the Prince-Bishops of Halberstadt. It was during this time that the castle was turned from a fortress to a modern residential complex with large gardens, a deer park and a hunting lodge. During the 19th century, Wernigerode Castle became a popular tourist attraction, and in 1856 the first restoration of the castle began. In 1925, the castle came into the possession of the town of Wernigerode and in 1927 further renovations began, which continued until the 1970s. Today the castle is open to the public and is a popular tourist attraction. Visit one of the famous monuments of Germany with your friends and family.
