History:

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is a museum dedicated to honoring the legends of Major League Baseball and scholars of the game, located in Cooperstown, New York. With its history and traditions deeply rooted in the small town of Cooperstown, NY, today it is recognized as the world’s premier shrine to the history of the sport. The initial impetus to organize the Hall of Fame came from the father-son tandem of Abner and Millard Doubleday in 1920. Both had great admiration for the game of baseball and wanted to make sure that the game’s immense popularity in 19th century America was preserved for future generations. The senior Doubleday was requested to use his wealth and influence to create a museum and National Baseball Hall of Fame for “the preservation of the memory of the greatest games ever created”. And so he did, in 1935, the Hall of Fame opened its doors in Cooperstown. Various artifacts from the Seniors, collections from prominent baseball historians, and donated memorabilia from various teams all found a place at the shrine. As the years passed, a number of famous players such as Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, and Lou Gehrig, among others, were inducted into the Hall of Fame. The museum also acquired a “Who’s Who” list of baseball greats by receiving countless artifacts, from Roberto Clemente’s last signed baseball to the glove worn by Joe DiMaggio during his 56-game hitting streak. Today, the museum serves as the world’s largest interactive baseball history centre. It recognizes the achievements of players, coaches, managers, and baseball executives, as well as baseball scholars and journalists. It also houses a huge collection of artifacts, photographs, documents, and artefacts that help to paint a picture of the history of the sport. The museum is currently undergoing renovation works and will reopen in 2020 - with a completely remodelled, interactive, multimedia exploration of baseball’s past, present and future.
