History:

The National Aquarium – Maryland in the U.S. is one of the oldest public aquariums in the world. Construction began on the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland in 1873 when a small aquarium was built on the grounds of the then-new Johns Hopkins University in the city’s Waverly neighborhood. The original National Aquarium was the first of its kind in the country to be open to the public and contained around 20 species of fish at its opening in 1878. The aquarium was then moved and opened on the first floor of the recently-built Maryland Institute of Art in 1882. This aquarium also featured stingrays, frogs, eels, and other aquatic creatures. In 1931, the National Aquarium opened its second location at the Belle Avenue location in Baltimore. A landmark, this aquarium was the first city-run aquarium in the United States. It became the National Aquarium – Maryland in 1964, when the National Institute of Marine Science leased the Belle Avenue building from the City of Baltimore. The original National Aquarium – Maryland closed its doors in 1983 due to budget cuts, but the Baltimore City Council stayed committed to the vision of having a public aquarium in the city. They decided to form The National Aquarium - Maryland Foundation, a non-profit organization, to raise funds to build the “new” National Aquarium - Maryland. The current National Aquarium opened its gates in 1981 in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and was the first in the nation dedicated solely to aquatic life. At more than 600,000 square feet, it is also the largest. It has over 15,000 specimens and over 2,200 species. Visitors today can explore the aquarium’s five habitats, which represent the diversity of life found in Earth’s oceans and rivers. The National Aquarium - Maryland also offers educational programs, public events and public programs that promote marine life conservation and eco-stewardship.
