History:

The ancient Temple of Artemis at Izmir (formerly known as Smyrna) was a temple dedicated to the ancient Greek goddess Artemis. The temple was located near the modern day city of Izmir and was the first Greek temple to be built in Anatolia, now part of Turkey. It was constructed around the 6th century BCE and was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It was destroyed by flooding in the 2nd century BCE but was rebuilt and remained an important pilgrimage site in the centuries that followed. Archaeological evidence suggests that the temple was built on a pre-existing site and included elements of Hittite construction. It was designed in the Ionic style and featured six expansive columns and was surrounded by a stone wall. The wall housed terracotta busts of the twelve Olympian gods, and a pool which was used to collect sacrificial offerings. The temple was looted by King Alexander of Macedonia in 334 BCE and was partially destroyed by the invading Romans in 263 BCE. The temple was rebuilt in the 2nd century BCE and regained its glory as a pilgrimage site. It was later destroyed by an earthquake in the 5th century CE. Its ruins, however, remain as a testament to its importance and its influence on the development of the area. The remains of the temple are now part of the Archaeological Park of Ephesus in the Selçuk district of Izmir.
