According to historical records, the Silifke Museum in Mersin was established as a result of a confederation created by the Turkish Republic and the municipality of Silifke in 1997. The Museum was established in the Çamlık neighbourhood of Silifke, thereby making it the first museum to be opened in the city. Its objective was to collect, document, and exhibit pieces of archaeological heritage and artifacts that had been found in the region. Through the years, the museum has made considerable progress and achieved considerable success in archaeology and also cultural identification and documentation. Various archaeological works have been conducted in the region around the museum of Silifke in order to expand its collection of artifacts and historic artifacts. Through the efforts of its Director, Dr. Kutsal Beşe, the museum has become an active research center in fields like archaeology, Byzantine art, Islamic Monuments, Paleolithic remains, and Classical history.
