History:

The Sillustani Funerary Towers, also known as chullpas, are a prehistoric legacy located to the north of Puno, on the shores of Lake Umayo in Peru. These impressive architectural structures were built by the Collas and Aymara people of the region between the 12th and 15th centuries. The towers remain one of the most spectacular cultural attractions in the area. Constructed to be used as virtual tombs by the high-ranking families of the Colla and Aymara, the towers were built of stone blocks in the form of truncated cones covered by a large capstone. Some of the towers have a secondary structure, created to store burial offerings. The towers reach up to 30 feet in height and contain several burial chambers, depending on the rank of the families. The location of each tower is also significant, with many of them located at crossroads, or near deposits of freshwater. Today, visitors can explore up to 38 towers, which vary in style, size and decoration. It is believed that up to 70 towers once stood at the site, and that many of them collapsed through time due to lack of maintenance. Each of the remaining towers provides a window into the cultural and religious beliefs of the Colla and Aymara peoples, attracting thousands of visitors to the area every year. Sillustani is part of the Unesco Universally Fraternity of Humanity Heritage and is one of the most important archeological sites in Central Andean Peru.
