History:
Kuntur Wasi is an archaeological site in Peru located in the Cusco region. It is situated on a peninsula that juts out into the well known lake, Laguna Humantay. The site, believed to have been established in the Late Horizon or Wari Period (900-1400 AD), has been excavated by archaeological teams since 1983, and is thought to have been a trading and ceremonial center for the Wari Empire. Archaeologists have found evidence of human development from the late Formative Period (1000-900 BC) through the Middle Horizon (400-900 AD). The site is composed of several multi-level building complexes, various courtyards, and plazas. It contains remains of irrigation systems, terraced fields, and underground reservoirs. Stone columns, or huacas, are found on the site. The Kuntur Wasi pyramids are the focal point of the site. They consist of a platform for the elite and a relatively small temple situated at the highest point. Several smaller pyramids are scattered around it. Although much of Kuntur Wasi was destroyed by the Spaniards when they invaded, several structures remain. Some archaeologists believe these structures may be part of a now-destroyed sun temple. The site is currently under consideration for World Heritage status. Visit one of the famous monuments of Peru with your friends and family.
