History:

Glorieta Cuitlahuac is an estuary located between the states of Veracruz and Tabasco, Mexico. The estuary is made up of over 200 small islands that over 450,000 people call home. The estuary has been used for fishing, transportation, and recreation since Pre-Hispanic times. In the 16th century, the Totonac people began to establish settlements on the estuary, as the region was remarkably well-suited for economical and agricultural development. With the ebb and flow of the tides, the islands were heavily populated with indigenous fishing villages and trading settlements. The Totonac and Nahuatl occupants of the island traded with people from other parts of Mexico, as well as from Central America and Cuba. In the mid 1800s, the estuary became known as Glorieta Cuitlahuac. During this time, the estuary also took on an important religious significance. In 1887, the Church of Guadalupe (now known as the Church of the Immaculate Conception) was built on an island in the estuary in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe. This church is still visited by local people and tourists today. For many years, the people who lived in the estuary practiced traditional navigation methods in order to traverse the waterways. This included hand-paddled canoes, small sail boats, and cargo boats. In the mid-1960s, the estuary became more accessible, with motorboats and ferries providing transportation.
