History:
Saarbrücken Castle is situated on a rocky outcrop in the centre of Saarbrücken, a city in Germany. It was formerly known as Saarburg Castle and its construction began in the 10th century by a Count from the local noble family of Hohenburg. The exact date of construction is unknown. Throughout its history, Saarbrücken Castle has been the residence of several aristocratic families and ruler of the area. It was originally a fortification used to protect the city and its citizens from invaders. In 1344, it was expanded and improved by the Hohenburgs. In 1789, it was destroyed during the French Revolution, but was rebuilt between 1794 and 1805 in a Neoclassical style by the Prussian government. After the Prussian defeat in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, the castle was returned to the rulers of the area, the House of Nassau-Saarbrücken. Under their rule, it was restored and expanded. The castle remained the residence of the House of Nassau-Saarbrücken until 1945, when it was occupied by American troops. In 1949, Saarbrücken became part of the German state of Saarland and the castle was eventually turned into a museum. Today, it is open to the public and is one of the most popular attractions in Saarbrücken. Visit one of the famous monuments of Germany with your friends and family.
