The stadium, originally built in 1923, was initially named the Müngersdorfer Stadion and was the first real football and athletics stadium in town. By the start of the 1950s, the stadium’s infrastructure had become worn out and outdated. The stadium was completely overhauled and the public funded most of the renovations. The name of the stadium was changed to the “Cologne Stadium” in 1954, and it was in this form that the venue was used in the 1974 World Cup. The stadium was again radically overhauled in the late 1990s, due to its prominent role in hosting matches during the 2006 World Cup. In 2002, the stadium’s operating company changed its name to become the „Stadion Köln GmbH”, repurposing the name „RheinEnergieStadion“. The name change celebrated the ground’s new main sponsor, the energy provider RWE. These renovations included the addition of VIP stands, improved floodlighting, and an entirely new roof structure.
