History:
Randers Regnskov (Rainforest of Randers) is a nature preserve located in the city of Randers, Denmark. It opened in 1996 and is the only rainforest in Europe. It is a tropical forest containing more than 150 species of exotic plants and animals, such as monkeys, snakes, frogs and birds. The area through which the rainforest is located was once a quarry, and in the mid-1990s it was decided by the municipality to transform the area into a rainforest. The project was initiated by the initiative group “Föreningen Til Regnskovens Fremme” (The Association for the Promotion of the Rainforest). The rainforest was designed by Danish architect and garden expert Mogens Lugård, and it was opened by the Danish Queen Margrethe II on June 8, 1996. The area is divided into three parts: the jungle, the entrance square and the meeting square. The jungle area is the largest part and offers a pathway of 1.5 km length in both directions, from which visitors can view the multilevel undergrowth. At the entrance square, visitors can learn more about the rainforest and its residents. The meeting square is decorated with a wooden pagoda in the center and offers visitors the pulse of nature. One of the main attractions of the Randers Regnskov is the wildlife viewing area, in which visitors can watch birds, monkeys, frogs, chameleons and snakes. In addition, the rainforest offers several educational activities such as lectures, workshops and presentations. Today, the Randers Regnskov is a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike, with more than hundreds of visitors every day.
