Skt. Maria & Skt. Markus is a Lutheran community church located in Copenhagen, Denmark. The church was built in the 16th century in the traditional brick Gothic style and is renowned for its grandeur. It is one of the largest and oldest churches of the city and is popular among tourists.
History
The church was founded in 1515 and completed in 1528. Throughout its long history, the church underwent various changes and additions, to accommodate the growing population in the area. Many times the church was damaged during wars or by fire. In 1711, a major fire destroyed the roof of the church. It was renovated years later, in 1727.
Facts
Skt. Maria & Skt. Markus is the second largest church of Copenhagen, with a span of 56 meters and height of 40 meters. The church contains a number of monuments and tombs of the members of the Danish Royal family. It also has a crypt full of sarcophagi. The current bells of the church were presented by Christian X to celebrate the completion of the tower in 1921.
