Brief History:
Mimar Sinan Mosque, also known as the Suleymaniye Mosque, is an impressive Ottoman mosque located in the Istanbul district of Uskudar. It is one of the largest mosques in the world and is considered to be the masterpiece of the renowned Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. The original mosque dates back to 1550 and construction was completed three years later in 1553. Mimar Sinan Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey was built in the late 1560s by Ottoman Empire's most famous architect Mimar Sinan. It is one of the most impressive examples of Ottoman architecture. Its construction was commissioned by the Sultan Suleiman II. The mosque is based on a square plan with four central piers. This gives the building a very distinct look. The dome is octagonal in shape and is 21 meters in height and 24 meters in diameter. The building is surrounded on three sides by a Courtyard, which is equally octagonal in shape and has a fountain in it. The entire building is of a honey-hued stone, laid in a diamond pattern alternating with stones of alternate colors. The main entrance has an impressive pointed arch with an inscription. The interior of the mosque is decorated with several intricate mosaics and carved wooden panels. Many of these panels have gold and silver inlay, which give the interior a luxurious air. The main focal point of the interior is the marble mihrab (prayer niche). It has an intricately carved and decorated surround and is topped with a large crescent. The minaret, which stands to one side of the mosque is only 15 meters high and is built in the traditional Ottoman style. The whole mosque is well lit during the day but at night especially during Ramadan, it is lit up with almost 1700 lanterns. Mimar Sinan Mosque in Istanbul is open to visitors every day throughout the year from 8.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. The mosque can also be accessed for worship at the same times, with the exception of Friday noon prayer.
