History:

Marmaris Castle in Mugla, Turkey, was built by Suleyman the Magnificent in the 16th century. The castle was strategically located atop a hill, overlooking the sea and had two main purposes: to guard the entrance to Marmaris Bay and to protect merchants coming into the harbor. The castle was originally constructed of red stone and had two main sections connected by fortified walls. The inner castle had a series of high towers and provided dwellings and storage rooms for the garrison, while the outer castle contained guardrooms with arrow slits overlooking the bay, stables, and water cisterns. In the early 1700s, the castle was partially destroyed in a major earthquake which also destroyed the nearby town of Marmaris.
