History:

The Kennedy Space Center, located at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge in Florida, USA, has served as the launching area for many historic space exploration missions, including the Apollo 11 mission to the Moon in 1969. The center has been the main launching site for the United States space program since its establishment in 1962. The initial plans for the center were discussed at the request of President John F. Kennedy shortly after his April 1961 address to Congress, in which he announced the national goal of "landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth." Development of the Florida Launch Complex began in July 1962, and the first launch from the site was of a Saturn 1 rocket on October 27, 1964. Initially, the Kennedy Space Center served as the base for development and testing of launch vehicles, as well as the launching site for manned and unmanned space missions. In December 1967, the center served as the main launch site for the Apollo 8 mission, the first spacecraft to fly around the Moon. In July 1969, the Apollo 11 mission launched from Kennedy Space Center, the first mission to land humans on the Moon. Since its establishment, the facility has undergone numerous upgrades in order to meet the changing needs of the US space program. In late 2011, the center began major renovations to modernize its buildings and infrastructure. The upgraded center was re-dedicated in 2014, and now serves as the main launching site for NASA’s Orion spacecraft and the SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket.
