The Kastrupgård Collection in Copenhagen was founded in the late 1850s by the Danish statesman and entrepreneur, P. Chr. Kastrup. He was a leading figure in the industrial age in Denmark and was instrumental in creating an environment that helped to promote and foster Danish creativity and innovation. Kastrup had a keen eye for art and was an avid collector of modern Danish pieces. He began to assemble his collection in the late 1850s and continued to do so until the late 1890s. The collection, which was comprised of over 1,500 works, was both diverse and eclectic. It included works from various genres, ranging from Japanese woodcuts, modern Danish furniture, and bronze sculpture to contemporary painting and drawings. Kastrup’s collection was highly influential, and helped to shape the era of modernism in Denmark.
