History:

H.C. Andersen's House in Odense, Denmark is the house where Hans Christian Andersen was born on 2 April 1805. At this place his family had lived since the 16th century. It is a metal-plated half-timbered house and was built in 1803-04. The house was where Andersen's father, Hans Andersen, worked as a shoemaker. Andersen stayed in the house as a child until he was fourteen years old, when he left for Copenhagen to grow up as a writer. The house was sold many times and different people lived in the house. Today, it is a museum owned by the City of Odense. It has been open to the public since 1878 and was restored to its 1805 appearance in 1988. The house contains a museum that display original furniture, documents and personal items from his life. There is also a small garden in front, used as a setting for the childhood memories of Andersen. In addition, the house is open for temporary exhibitions related to Andersen's work and life. The house also functions as a point of reference for Andersen's legacy, and is visited by research groups from around the world.
