History:

Ordrupgaard is an art museum located in the suburb of Charlottenlund, Copenhagen, Denmark. It was founded in 1918 by the Finnish-born collector Wilhelm Hansen and his wife Henny Hansen. The two originally purchased a stately home in the area in order to house their growing art collection, which mostly consisted of 19th century Danish and French paintings. After the couple donated their home and the art collection to the Danish state upon their death in 1933, the home became a public museum dedicated to housing the collection as well as touring exhibitions. The museum was expanded in 1953 and then again in 1985 to its current size. Today, the museum holds more than 700 artworks in its permanent collection, including works by Auguste Renoir, Paul Gauguin, Edgar Degas, and Vincent Van Gogh. It also hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year. The museum was designed by architect Wilhelm Hansen, who was also responsible for the design of the Royal Danish Theater and the exhibition halls of the Charlottenborg Palace. The building itself has a neoclassical style and includes gardens and several sculptures, including a “Morris Column” by the artist Herman Wilhelm Bissen and a bronze figure of Lady Godiva by Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen.
