History:
Christiansborg Palace, located in Copenhagen, Denmark, is the largest building complex in the country. It has housed the Danish monarchy and the government since its completion in 1928. The palace has a long and fascinating history that dates back to the Middle Ages. The first castle on the site of the current Christiansborg Palace was built on the island of Slotsholmen in the late 12th century during the reign of King Valdemar I. The castle was the most important building in the Kingdom of Denmark and often served as the seat of the monarch. Throughout the centuries the castle endured several fires and rebuilds. In 1731, King Christian VI ordered the construction of a palace in the baroque style. This new palace was built on the site of the old castle and was designed by the noted Danish architect Nicolai Eigtved. The palace was grand and impressive and included a chapel, multiple halls, and many living quarters for the royal family. In 1884, King Christian IX ordered the demolition of the palace to make room for a larger building. The new palace, constructed from 1898 to 1908, was designed by the architect Thorvald Jørgensen and was strongly influenced by French styles, such as the private chapel which resembled the gallery of Versailles. Today, the palace is used not only as the residence of the Danish monarch, but it is also used as a museum and for official events. Recently, Christiansborg Palace underwent a complete renovation which included the construction of a new theater. The palace is a popular tourist destination in Copenhagen and remains a symbol of the strength and endurance of the Danish monarchy.
