, Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad is the oldest and most prominent Roman Catholic cathedral in the Mexican city of Oaxaca. The original construction of the cathedral dates back to 1535, when the first mayor of the city, Francisco García Guerrero, laid the cornerstone. Over the years, the construction and design of the building has evolved, but the cathedral remains dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The building itself is an excellent example of Spanish colonial architecture and features several historical features such as stained glass windows, stone altars and a rich history of religious art. The cathedral also hosts a number of important services such as funerals, baptisms, and masses. Each day, the cathedral opens its doors for the public to admire its design, architecture and art.
