Burg Eltz is a castle in the Eltz Forest in Wierschem, Germany. Its full name is "Burg Eltz - Schloss und Vogtei." It is a medieval castle on a rocky spur of the Eltzer Forest above the Moselle Valley, between the towns of Cochem and Treis-Karden. The castle is still owned and occupied by a branch of the Eltz family, which has held it since the 12th century. The castle was first built around the year 1157 by the Eltz family. The family grew envious of the growing wealth and power of their neighbors, so they renovated the castle around 1240, adding a grand keep and a chapel.
