History:

Bakkehus Museum is an historic house museum in Frederiksberg, an independent municipality in Denmark. It is the former home of the writer and poet, Holger Drachmann and his family and showcases the life and work of the artist. The museum opened to the public in 1927 and is now recognized as a national cultural heritage site. Originally, the building was the private home of Drachmanns family and was built in 1860-1861, in the vein of a German Renaissance style villa. Drachmann lived there from 1865 until his death in 1908. It was the site of the gathering of artists and scholars, called the “Monday gatherings”, which held there on a weekly basis. These meetings were social occasions that allowed a great many of the Danish cultural elite to come together and discuss literature and ideas. After Drachmanns death, and due to financial problems, the estate was sold to a developer, much to the dismay of the cultural elite of Frederiksberg. That caused the writer Georg Brandes, an advocate of the "Monday Gatherings", to launch a public campaign to save it from demolition and eventually turn it into a museum in honor of Drachmann. The museum was created in 1927 and was run by a committee made up of representatives from the Drachmann family, the Frederiksberg municipality, and the Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Today, Bakkehus Museum has grown to include many different activities, including weekly art exhibitions, concerts, poetry readings, lectures, and workshops. It is also a popular venue for weddings and other special events. The museum remains dedicated to the preservation of Danish cultural heritage and artistry, both from the Drachmann era and present day.
