History:

Amalienborg Palace is the royal residence of Denmark’s monarch. The palace is located in Copenhagen and located on the site of the original Amalienborg, which was destroyed by a devastating fire that ripped through the city in 1794. Prior to the fire, the palace had been the home to the royal family since the late 17th century. Amalienborg was originally built as four independent palace buildings at the end of the 17th century, each belonging to a prominent noble family. The palaces were connected when Christian V commissioned the building of a single royal palace in 1749. The square was formally named in honor of Queen Sophie Magdalene, who was the first Danish queen to live in the new palace. Throughout the years, various monarchs added to and renovated the palace. In the 19th century, Christian VIII extended the palace and improved the interiors. His daughter, Queen Victoria, also added her touch to the former summer residence, increasing the number of bedrooms and personally selecting the furniture and the decorations. During the Nazi Occupation of Denmark, Amalienborg Palace was the site of the meeting room where the Danish government negotiated a peaceful surrender. On April 9th, 1940, the royal family left the Amalienborg Palace to escape the Nazis and moved to the countryside. Following their peaceful return, the family visited the palace and was met by a large cheering crowd.
