The Yas Marina Circuit is a Formula One motor racing circuit located on the Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. As the first day-night race of the Formula One world championship, it was designed by Hermann Tilke, and the majority of the circuit was built in 2009. The circuit's opening event was the final race of the 2009 Formula One season, the 2009 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Built on the surface of a former deep-water port, the track's design incorporates sections of the existing waterfront, while still delivering all the essential ingredients of a modern 21st century F1 circuit. Features include an underground pit lane passing beneath the track, a marina and connecting canal, a mixture of slow, medium and high-speed corners and a curving main straight. There are three long straights dispersed amongst an elaborate mix of fast and challenging sweepers. Considering its stunning location, the track is often described as the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the Yas Marina Complex. It has played host to a number of world-class international and regional motorsport events, including the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the Abu Dhabi Touring Car Championship, the World Superbike Championship, the World Endurance Championship, and the GP2 Series.
