Al Noor Island is a dynamic urban landscape in the heart of Sharjah. Its history stretches back almost 100 years, and it has evolved into a major cultural destination since its Opening in 2016. The Al Noor Island project was conceived to honor and to commemorate the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's legacy in the country. In 2007, the Ruler of Sharjah, H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, initiated the project of building Al Noor Island in his capital. In 2009, Emirati sculptor and artist, Ahmed Alalemey, was given the task of creating the island, which is completely inspired by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his spirit of creativity and cultural openness. The four-hectare project was completed and opened to the public in 2016 with the aim of creating a cultural destination. The island is designed to showcase Sharjah's natural beauty through artworks, sculptures, botanical gardens and dedicated activity zones. In addition, the Al Noor Island boardwalk, with its bright colors and geometric shapes, gives visitors the feeling of walking through a modern art gallery. The island was recently voted one of the top cultural destinations in the Middle East by the prestigious A-list Awards. It has also been named the top tourist attraction in the UAE by Google's World Tourist Monitor. Today, Al Noor Island attracts many visitors year round, including tourists and local Emirati citizens.
