History:

Al Jazirah Al Hamra Old Town is located in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK), United Arab Emirates (UAE). It is considered as one of the oldest settlements in the world, with a rich heritage, culture, and traditions. It was settled in the early 14th century by Bedouin nomads. According to historical accounts, the mostly Bani Yas-based tribe of Qurayza called the Qawasim and their Sheikh, Jumayl ibn 'Umar Al Qawasimi, first settled the area. The town was then a strategic port for ships, which traded with other Gulf regions and by at least the 16th century it was becoming an important pearl trading centre. The town also served as the capital of the UAE during the era of Qawasim rule in Ras Al Khaimah (1775–1820). During this period, the town became renowned for its production of items that were exported to trade partners across the region, such as pearls, dates, nuts, coffee, fabric, and weapons. With the decline of pearl trading in the 1950s, the town started to lag behind other areas of development in the region. In 1967, the Al Hamra Old Town was declared one of the United Arab Emirates' first UNESCO World Heritage sites, in recognition of its cultural heritage and long-standing economic importance. In recent years, the Al Jazirah Al Hamra Old Town has seen some development and renovation efforts. These have focused on restoring and preserving many of the traditional and historical buildings in the area, such as old mud-brick homes, forts, and public squares. These renovations are intended to encourage tourism and to maintain the area's rich heritage. The older sections of Al Jazirah Al Hamra Old Town are also preserved as protected areas in order to conserve its history and traditional architecture.
