The Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) is a Christian denomination that is part of the Presbyterian denomination worldwide. It was established in 1947 as the, West African Presbyterian Church, under the auspices of the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland. The Church of Scotland and the United Free Church of Scotland amalgamated to form the Church of Scotland in 1929, and in 1943 the Church of Scotland entered into fellowship with the Church of Scotland in West Africa. The senior pastor of the PCG in Togo is currently Rev. Barnabas Tsatsu Adjei. The church is committed to social development, as it works to provide quality education, healthcare, and clean water and sanitation. History The church was founded in 1947 in what was then the British colony of Nigeria, in what is now Ghana. Its first missionaries were sent out in 1949, and the Presbyter Church Ghana has expanded over the years and now has over 110 congregations in Ghana and Togo, making it the largest Protestant denomination in the country. In 1997, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana entered into a formal partnership with the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, with the goal of furthering the work of missions, education, healthcare, economic development, and social justice. In 2010, seven congregations of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in Togo were established by merging their former parishioners from the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in Nigeria with those from the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in Ghana. Facts • The Presbyterian Church of Ghana has more than 550,000 members and over 7,000 ordained ministers throughout Togo, Ghana, Nigeria, and other countries. • It has also established social projects that work towards the alleviation of poverty and the promotion of sustainable development in local communities. • The PCG has a strong emphasis on social justice and outreach, and works to address issues such as gender inequality, poverty, and the environment. • The PCG is also a member of the World Communion of Reformed Churches, a body of Protestant churches reflecting a global outlook on things, including justice and peace. Services The PCG provides a variety of religious, outreach, and social services in its congregations and in the larger communities served by them. These services include: • Care and counseling of members, as well as providing physical, spiritual, and emotional support. • Preaching and teaching, and equipping members of the congregations in developing their faith, ethical orientation, and scriptural knowledge. • Offering education, healthcare, and poverty relief for the benefit of local communities. • Developing charitable works in partnership with other churches and organizations. • Proactive participation in ecumenical movements to build bridges between different denominations and religions.
