History:
is one of the Arupadai Veedu, the six holy abodes of Lord Murugan which are revered by the people of Tamil Nadu. Tiruttani Temple is located on a hillock at the top of Tiruttani Hill, 55 km from Chennai. It is believed that Lord Muruga was pleased by the prayers of Sage Agastya and revealed himself as an impressive powerful form of Subrahmanya Swami with his two consorts Valli and Deivanai. The hill is 751 m high and on a clear day one can see Chennai city from the top of the hill. The worship at Tiruttani Murugan Temple is conducted according to ‘Aagama’ or temple codes of Saiva religion. As per tradition, pilgrims should take bath in ‘Swami Pushkarani’ situated beside the temple before entering into the temple. The ‘Archana’ which is a normal feature of worship in every temple is offered in a systematic way. After Archana, devotees participate in the abhishekam or mukkavizha which is performed to the presiding deity. Consisting of a complete eight-part ritual, this is an important part of the temple customs. Following this, Ashtaabandhana, a process of worshipping Lord Muruga in various forms during different stages of the day is conducted. Finally, after the entire process is completed, devotees distribute the remnants of the abhishekam or mukkavizha known as ‘tirtham’, as ‘prasada’ to the visitors.
