Thiruvellarai is one of the 108 Divya Desams of Hindu temple worship sites spread across India, Tibet, and Sri Lanka. The temple is located in Tiruchirapalli district of Tamil Nadu, India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and it is one of the divya desams of the Alwars (the four prominent saints of India), where he is known by his nickname, Periya Perumal, meaning the great one. The temple is said to have been built by the Pandyan dynasty and is believed to have been constructed in the 9th century. Legend has it that Lord Brahma and Goddess Saraswati have worshipped at the temple. The temple has its origins in the Thiruppavai poem of the great Tamil saint, Nammalvar, who composed it to praise the Lord. The temple is particularly well known for the fifty verses of Thiruppavai found within its complex walls.
