John Atwood church is located in Ummayad Square in Damascus, Syria. It dates back to the 5th century when it was part of a monastery for Armenian and Greek Orthodox monks. After the Syrian civil war, the church was left empty and in terrible disrepair. In 2012, the church was renovated by the Syrian Relief and Development organization, and has since been used for Christian meetings and worship services. 1. John Atwood Church was a Presbyterian pastor from Northern Syria. 2. He was the first missionary to be sent to Syria by the United Presbyterian Church in America. 3. He settled in Aleppo in 1820 and founded a school and church there. 4. During his ministry, he wrote six books in Arabic and translated six books from English to Arabic. 5. He also founded the first modern printing press in Syria. 6. He died in 1839 in Syria from a fever, however his work in Syria and the Middle East continued to be carried on by other missionaries. 7. His legacy includes the Syrian Protestant College in Beirut (now the American University of Beirut) which was established in 1866.
