Hagia Sophia Church In Syria: History,Facts, & Services
History:
Hagia Sophia Church, located in the ancient city of Amrit, is a major sixth century Byzantine church. It is believed to have been built by the King of Syria, Justinian I, between 532 and 537AD. The Church is thought to have been built as a memorial to St. John Chrysostom, a Christian theologian and preacher, who suffered banishment from Constantinople. It is also thought to have been a sign of victory for Justinian I, as the Church was built shortly after the Byzantine Empire had conquered Syria. The Church is an important example of early Byzantine architecture and is noted for its mosaic floor and stunning dome. The Church was sacked by the Umayyads in 637AD and changed its religious purpose several times over the centuries. It was briefly used as a mosque before serving various purposes such as a sugar factory and a gymnasium. In 1932 it was declared an archaeological site by the French and is currently being restored. It is one of the best churches in Syria which you must visit.
