History:

Himeji-jō, also known as Shirasagi-jō (White Heron Castle), is a hilltop Japanese castle complex situated in Himeji, Hyōgo Prefecture, on the southern coast of the main island of Honshū. It is considered one of the best-preserved castle complexes in Japan. It was designated a National Treasure of Japan by the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 1952 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. The construction of the castle was first begun in 1346 by Akamatsu Sadanori, the eldest son of Akamatsu Sadayoshi. After a number of different clans conquered and rebuilt the castle it became the stronghold of the powerful Oda clan in the Sengoku period. Though the castle complex has been repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt, the main structure - the keep - has retained its original form since the 17th century and remains a monument to the high medieval period of Japanese history. The castle was extensively renovated during the Edo period, in 1618, and has been declared a national treasure of Japan in 1952. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. The simplicity of the castle's exterior belies its complex layout, which is designed to delay an intruder's progress towards the upper floors, and to channel defenders from the top levels to counterattack and repel invaders.
