The Vairavar Temple in Samippulam, Poonakari (also known as Maviddapuram temple) is one of the few ancient temples dedicated to Lord Murugan in Sri Lanka. This temple is a very important part of Sri Lankan Hindu culture and heritage. The worship method in the Vairavar Temple follows the traditions of the famous South Indian Siddha system of Sri Lanka. Here Lord Murugan is worshipped in the form of the Supreme Lord, known as Vairavar. Offerings such as fruits, flowers, coconuts and milk are made to the Lord each day. Pilgrimages to this temple are considered very important and devotees from throughout the country and even from abroad come to offer their respects and prayers to the Lord. In the temple compound is a large shrine for Lord Murugan, decorated with flowers and brightly colored lightings. On puja days, the rituals in the temple follow the Siddha tradition. The main puja rite starts with an offering of milk placed on a tray, along with some sweets and fruits. After this, a chitra or painting of Lord Murugan is placed on the tray. Prayers and invocations are then offered to the Lord, who is worshipped through chanting of mantras and offering of other items. After the prayers, aarti is performed, and the devotees receive prasadam or blessed food items as a sign of the Lord’s blessings. Then the devotees circumambulate (perambulate) the shrine three times - clockwise - in honour and homage to Lord Murugan. This most visited temple in SriLanka
