St. Mary's Church, Aniwatte in Srilanka is an ancient parish church built in 1594 by the Portuguese. It is believed to be the oldest Christian church in the country. The church stands as a significant example of Portuguese colonial architecture. Various artifacts from the period of the Portuguese rule, including a large bell given by Sub-Inspector Gomes Francisco on August 28, 1620, can be found inside the church. The church also has a relic of the Sacred Cross brought by Francisco de Mello from the Holy Land in 1618. Visitors to the church can also see an ancient pulpit, beautiful stained-glass windows, and a stone carving of the Virgin Mary over the main entrance. In addition, the church also hosts several events and activities related to the Catholic faith, such as weekly Mass, retreats, and other gatherings.
