St. Benedict's Church, Kanjukkuliya In Srilanka is a Roman Catholic Church founded in the mid-19th century by the Portuguese missionaries at Chandirigama in Kegalle district, Sri Lanka. It is now affiliated with the Archdiocese of Colombo and is served by the parish priest and six Religious Brothers. St. Benedict's Church was established in 1850 by the worshippers of the Portuguese Missionary Society in Sri Lanka. This Church was subjected to various attacks by the Sinhala people, who at that time considered Christianity as the enemy of Buddhism. This Church served as a shelter and retreat for the English during World War II and was also a place of gathering for the locals. St. Benedict's Church is famous for its unique architecture, which is evidence of a mixture of the old and new styles of construction. The entrance is a beautiful circular door, decorated with immense wooden ivory and copper. On both sides of the door are large statues of Archangel and Saint Michael, the traditional symbol of Christianity. Inside, one finds ample space for sitting and kneeling, with chairs and other items for sale. There is a large balcony that can accommodate a great number of people for prayer. Its walls are adorned with colourful pictures showing the Bounteousness of God and his love for humanity. St. Benedict's Church offers a variety of services and facilities, including regular masses, religious vespers and celebrations. Parish services are organized according to the Roman Catholic doctrine and the traditions of the Church. Every Sunday, an African mass is conducted for those who belong to the African community. Confession and marriage services are also available. The Church also conducts retreats, prayer sessions and special events throughout the year. The annual St. Benedict feast is celebrated on the day of his birth, the 11th day of August, and Church activities and festivities are conducted on that day. Special prayers are held on Good Friday and on other days as needed. The Church is open on all days of the week, and members and non-members are welcome to join in the religious activities. The Church provides a safe and secure environment for worship and fellowship among the Roman Catholic and the African community in Kanjukkuliya.
