According to local legend, the sacred shrine of Goddess Kali from Atchuveli, Valalai in Jaffna, was built by Lord Rama himself as he passed through the Jaffna continent on his way to Lanka. The temple consists of two shrines, one devoted to the deity of Kali, and the other for Vishnu in Sri Lanka. Worship Method:
The worship method followed at Valalai East Kali Temple in Valalai, Atchuvely in Sri Lanka involves a group of priests who involve devotional prayers and rituals in the form of Poojas and Abhishekams. Offerings of flowers and incense are offered to the Goddess. Devotees traditionally chant holy mantras and perform circumambulations of the sanctum sanctorum while doing archana. Pradakshinas are performed around the deity in a clockwise direction. The guru or priest will offer sacred water to the deity and then to the devotee. Offerings of fruit, coconuts and other items are provided. At the end of the pooja, the devotee will typically offer a Naivedya or offering of food to the deity.
