St.Joshep Church In Srilanka: History,Facts, & Services

St. Joseph's Church is a Roman Catholic parish in the Diocese of Calicut in Kalingal, Srilanka. The present church was built in 1854 and it replaced a small chapel that was built nearby in 1703. As one of the oldest Catholic parishes in Srilanka, St. Joseph’s has played a significant role in the history of the church in the country. St. Joseph’s Church was founded by the Congregation of Jesuits. It is believed to have been built as a refuge for the Portuguese merchants who arrived in the area. Later, other Europeans also had started to move to the locality and had become part of the church. Later, the church became mainly Tamil and Sinhalese in its congregation. St. Joseph’s Church celebrates Mass two or three times a week in both Tamil and Sinhala languages. It also has various educational programs targeted at children in the surrounding localities, helping them to cope with the modern world. St. Joseph’s Church is just one example of the vibrant spiritual life that exists in Srilanka. In addition to its religious activities and programs, it serves as an important point of reference and as a rallying point for the local Tamil and Sinhalese communities. Its history and ongoing presence provide poignant reminders of the strength that comes from diversity and community support.
