St. Mary's Church, Ampitiya In Srilanka is a Catholic parish located in the hill-country town of Ampitiya in Kandy District of Sri Lanka. It began its existence in 1802, when it was established by Fr. Antonio Calcagno. Over the years, the parish has served the spiritual needs of the local Catholic community, providing sacraments, catechism classes, and other religious services. The church was initially established in a small chapel, but soon grew to a more substantial building in the years that followed. In 1970, St. Mary's was declared a minor basilica, or an important church where religious holidays are celebrated and attended by the local Bishop. The current church building dates back to 1927 and was built in the traditional Neo-Gothic style of architecture. The parish of St. Mary's is still a vibrant and bustling part of the local Catholic community in Ampitiya, and today it is home to about 400 families. Mass is held every Sunday, and the church also runs several special activities, such as pilgrimages and other devotionals, throughout the year.
