History:
According to local legends, St. Anthony's Shrine was founded by Fr. John Baptist Caretto, a Portuguese missionary, in 16 eque. Other versions believe it was established in 1848 by Fr. Joseph Vaz, the apostle of Sri Lanka. A church was constructed in 1895 and the first mala was held here in 1900. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Srilanka.
