Worship Method:

The Sri Sithi Vinayagar Temple in Negombo, Sri Lanka follows the South Indian style of worship, which has its roots in the Vaishnavite and Shaivite movements of Hinduism. The religious procedures are very similar to those of other Hindu temples found in Sri Lanka and India. The manner of worship involves lighting oil lamps, offering flowers and chanting prayers to a deity. The devotees anoint the deity with oil and wash its feet with holy water as part of the worship ritual. A priest then chants Vedic mantras while offerings of fruits, nuts and other offerings are made. At the end of the puja (worship) milk or sweets can be offered. Devotees kneel in prayer and prostrate themselves in front of the deity. Afterwards, prasadam (blessed food) is distributed.
