History:

is an ancient Indian Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Murugan. The temple was built in the 18th century by Singai Nayinaar, a priest from Madurai, India. It is a picturesque temple located amidst paddy fields, coconut and palm tree grooves. The temple has many inscriptions recording the visits of famous kings, mainly of the later Chola period (9th-11th century CE). Worship Method:

The worship of the Sivan Kovitpulam temple in Tellippalai, Sri Lanka is mostly based on the traditions followed in other Hindu temples in the country. Generally, the ritual begins with the washing of the deity's idol, followed by chanting of mantras and other Vedic hymns. After the mantras and hymns, the deity is adorned with saffron cloth and flowers prior to a procession. The devotees then offer food and perform abhishekas, or bathing ceremonies. This is followed by a setting up of the sacred fire, called the homam, which involves elaborate rituals and offerings. After the offerings, the Guru chants powerful mantras and recites slokas. The Lord is then offered various “Naivedyam'' or traditional dishes, along with prasadam(holy offerings). The ritual ends with the devotees singing bhajans and offering prayers at the end.
