The worship method of Sivan temple Kitulvewa follows the traditional methods and customs of the Hindus. Before entering the Temple, devotees do pradakshina or circumambulation around the Sanctum sanctorum of the Temple which is considered as a way to honor the Deities of the Temple. Pilgrims also perform Aarathi, an act of reverence in which a flame is waved before the Deities. Apart from this, devotees offer their prayers, seek blessings and undying love of Lord Shiva with chanting of mantras and performing poojas (worship with offerings such as flowers, coconuts, fruits etc.). Offerings are made with the 5 traditional grain items of rice, urad dal, dhal, toor dal and kadalai (black gram). A sacred thread Yajnopaveetham is tied around the arm or neck of the devotees before the pooja. Special elaborate poojas are also performed on special days and festivals.
