Worship Method:

The Sri Lankan tradition for worship in a Shiva temple typically includes ritualistic rituals such as ringing bells, offering ghee, and pouring holy water for Shiva as an offering. The devotee then stands in front of the Shivling, the sacred symbol of Shiva, and chants mantras and hymns in honor of Shiva. The main mantra devoted to Shiva is the "Om Namah Shivaya". After chanting the mantra, devotees offer incense, flowers, fruits and sweets to Shiva as a sign of respect. A 'havan' or a sacred fire is lit as an offering to the deity. The mantras are usually sung to the accompaniment of a single string musical instrument. Water is poured on the lingam as a sign of respect to the god.
