Worship Method:

The Kovilkulam Sivan temple in Vavuniya is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Sivan. As with most Hindu temples, worship in the Kovilkulam Sivan temple starts with a prayer and chanting of mantras. After this, the devotee makes offerings of flowers, incense and other items to the deities, either directly or in front of their images. These items symbolically represent words of love, blessing and gratitude. The puja ritual of the Kovilkulam Sivan temple is typically a four-part process. The first part includes the offering of a coconut and other items to the presiding deity. The second stage involves lighting the lamp in the temple, with dedicated offerings being made. The third step involves performing an archana (chanting of mantras) or offering deepam (flame) and the fourth step entails pradhakshinam (circumambulation) of the deity, with respect and reverence. All four stages are generally conducted in a clockwise direction. Finally, aarti is performed (lighting of lamps) and the devotees chant mantras which are followed by the offering of aarti. After the puja is completed, arati and stotras are chanted as a way to invite Lord Sivan to bless the devotees. As a sign of devotion, they also ring the temple bells throughout the puja. Once the worship is completed, the devotees offer sweets to the deities and then share these with other devotees as a mark of respect and devotion. It is also seen as a way to bring peace and harmony between all in attendance. The temple also serves Prasadam (food blessed by the deity) to all devotees, which is offered as part of the puja ritual. This most visited temple in SriLanka
